Arghakhanchi – Following the handover of national forests to local people, community forests in Arghakhanchi district have been making an annual income of more than Rs 40 million.
According to the District Forest Office, Rs 30.1386 million was earned by selling timber and Rs 9.5 million through grass and firewood. The naked hills saw greenery after the national forests became community forests.
Forest conservation efforts have picked pace with local people themselves coming forward to save forests. The income made by community forests has been utilised in local development.
More roads, school buildings and drinking water projects have been constructed through the income of community forests.
An abundant availability of grass and firewood has promoted cattle farming in villages.
According to Forest Officer Suresh Singh, there are more than 338 community forests in Arghakhanchi district.
