After holding numerous rounds of talks over the past few weeks, the major political parties have eventually failed to settle the disputed constitutional issues through consensus. Concluding that the major parties proved unsuccessful in their bid to resolve the contentious issues through mutual understanding, a meeting of the Constitutional Committee held this morning has decided to take the same to the Constituent Assembly for voting. The CC, in this regard has directed its secretariat to make necessary preparations for voting at the CA.
The second largest party Nepali Congress had put forth its view that the constitution should be drafted by incorporating the issues that have been resolved till date and that the issue of Federalism be settled through a ‘Federal Commission’. Convener of the Dispute Resolution Sub-committee and Maoist Chairman Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ expressed hope that the CA would be able to iron out the disputed issues after saying that the responsibility to do so had now shifted over to it from the major political parties. The President of the Constitutional Committee Nilambar Acharya informed that the remaining thorny issues of constitution would now be sent over to the Constituent Assembly with the tag of ‘unresolved’ attached to them.
Earlier, political parties had tried to narrow down their differences at the meeting of the Dispute Resolution Subcommittee as well. Leaders stated that the voting process would begin at the CA from tomorrow side by side with the efforts to resolve the differences through consensus. The issue of state restructuring has been a major bone of contention among the parties as each of them has remained firm on their respective stance. Meanwhile, the meeting of the Constituent Assembly scheduled for today has been postponed till 3:00 pm tomorrow as no topic for discussion at the CA could be decided today. RSS
