Indian court lets Pakistani convict visit his home

NEW DELHI, INDIA – India is allowing an 80-year old Pakistani man who was jailed for murder to visit his homeland.

The country’s Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that Khalil Chishty can travel to Pakistan after being freed on bail last month.

Chishty, a scientist, was convicted of killing a man during a dispute in the Indian state of Rajasthan in 1992. He was visiting a Sufi shrine in the city of Ajmer.

The scientist had been detained for nearly two decades before being convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison in January of 2011.

The Supreme Court said Thursday that Chishty can visit his home in Pakistan but must return to India by November, when the court will take up his appeal.

Pakistani leaders had urged their Indian counterparts to allow Chishty to return home.
