Supreme Court Justice Bam dies during treatment


KATHMANDU, MAY 31 – Supreme Court Justice Rana Bahadur Bam who was shot at Sankhamul in the Capital has died while undergoing treatment at Norvic Hospital on Thursday.

 

Executive Director at the hospital Dr. Bharat Rawat confirmed the death of Justice Bam. Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai who had reached the hospital to take a stock of Bam’s health also confirmed the death.

 

Bam and his bodyguard Mahesh Giri were shot at by an unidentified group at Sankhamul at about 11:30 this morning. Bam was on his way to the office in a car (Ba 8 Cha 9853) when the shooters in a pulsar motorcycle shot Bam in his neck, chest and hand. Bam’s bodyguard Giri also received a bullet in his neck. They were rushed for treatment at the Norvic Hospital following the incident.

 

A pamplet of previously unknown Nepalbad Party has been found on the shooting scene. The shooters are yet to be identified.

 

Bam was barred from hearing cases right after he was indicted of misconduct while releasing three notorious criminals convicted of abduction on a low bail. Few months after their release, the same criminals abducted Dr. Bhaktaman Shrestha of BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Chitwan. One of the criminals had admitted that they had paid a hefty amount to bribe the judges, including Bam for their release.

 

An impeachment process had also been initiated against Bam.

 

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has expressed serious concern upon the daylight shooting of Justice Bam. PM Bhattarai telephoned Home Minister Bijay Kumar Gachhadar and home secretary and directed to initiate the investigation into the case and bring the guilty to justice.

 

PM has also directed to beef up the security condition of the country to avert such incidents from happening in the future.
