ITAHARI – Come monsoon and the people living in villages near the numerous streams and rivulets in the southern part of Sunsari district are under perpetual fear of flooding.
A total of 19 Village Development Committees (VDCs) have been identified as the most- at-risk VDCs from floods in the district.
In view of the risk of floods during the rainy season, local social and community organizations, with support from the Sunsari District Development Committee (DDC), are planning to conduct disaster mitigation training targeted at the youths.
The risk of flooding by the Sunsarikhola stream has further increased with the project for construction of embankment on the bank of the stream from local Inaruwa to Bhutaha in limbo. This project is being implemented with the cooperation of the Government of India.
Similarly, the spurs constructed along the eastern bank of the Kosi River have become worn out for lack of repair and entrenchment.
The risk of flood from the the Tangra and Budhikhola streams are also high in the southern parts of Itahari and the Khanar, Sonapur and Duhabi VDCs. RSS
