KATHMANDU – Deputy Prime Minister Naryan Kaji Shrestha stressed on the need to correct all treaties including the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Preservation Agreement (BIPPA) made by Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai.
Shrestha said that opinions vary in the UCPN (Maoist) regarding the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPA) signed with India and other agreements too.
Speaking at the face to face program organized by the Reporters Club Nepal on Monday, Shrestha claimed that differences persisted within the government and in the party between him and the Prime Minister on those controversial issues.
Stating that he had expressed his objection on the issue in the cabinet meeting and with Indian Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh, Shrestha said “the agreement needs to be corrected as it was made by the Prime Minister without holding consultations within and outside the party”.
Stating that he has always stood against any agreement that possess threat to national sovereignty, Shrestha called for immediate correction of the treaties at the program presided by Reporters Club President Rishi Dhamala.
In a different context, Shrestha said that conducive environment would be created for holding elections on November 22 if the Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) expressed their willingness for the national consensus.
He said constitution could be amended and peace building process could be given a momentum based on consensus of the opposition parties.
Shrestha who is also the UCPN (Maoist) Vice-Chairman said that the recently concluded seventh plenum of the party has stressed on safeguarding national independence and moving ahead by changing the form of the revolution.
Saying he would like to extend his best wishes to Pranab Mukherjee, the President-elect of India, the Maoist Vice-Chairman made it clear that the UCPN (Maoist) has not changed its previous stands on India. RSS
