29 dead as Kurdish rebels clash with Turkey forces

ISTANBUL – About 20 Kurdish fighters and nine Turkish soldiers have been killed in clashes in the country’s southeast, local sources say.

The sources said on Monday that 20 members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) died in overnight fighting between the group and Turkish government forces.

“Nine security agents were killed and eight others wounded,” Vahdettin Ozkan, governor of Sirnak province, said.

He said the fighters attacked security posts in a town near the border with Iraq.

Ozkan told Turkey’s state-run news agency, Anadolu, that the attack occurred in the town of Beytussebap late on Sunday.

Fighting between the Turkish army and rebels from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has intensified in recent months, a development which some Turkish officials and analysts have linked to the chaos in Syria.
