5 killed after car bomb hits US vehicle in Pakistan

Islamabad – Officials in northwest Pakistan say a car bomb near the U.S. consulate in Peshawar has killed at least five people and wounded several others.

Monday’s explosion happened in an area of Peshawar that is home to several foreign aid organizations and the United Nations.

Two Americans were among the five killed in Monday’s blast, the regional information minister Mian Iftikhar said.

A policeman told the AP news agency that an explosive-filled car struck a US government vehicle after it left the consulate. Seventeen more people were injured.

The blast took place near residential quarters for the US consulate and foreign aid organisations, senior police officer Tahir Ayub told the AFP news agency.

Witnesses said two vehicles were completely destroyed in the explosion.

Some of the wounded are foreign nationals, police officer Pervez Khan told the AP. The identities of those killed were unclear.

US officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

The area hosts several foreign organisations, including the UN.

Peshawar is situated near tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, where Taliban and al-Qaeda operate.

There is no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
