The first Olympian of Nepal, Bhupendra Silwal, passed away Thursday night. He was 78. He died while undergoing treatment of stomach tumor at the Chhauni-based Birendra Army Hospital. He was admitted to the Hospital on September 17.
According to Chairman of the Nepal Sports Journalists Forum, Niranjan Rajbanshi, he died after he could not regain consciousness during the operation of the tumor.
Silwal had participated in the Olympics held in Tokyo of Japan in 1964 for the first time from Nepal. Similarly, he had run bare foot in the Asian Sports Competition held in 1958.
Silwal had reached London to watch this year’s Olympics held in London.
The Nepal Sports Journalists Forum on July/August had honored Silwal from the Life Time Achievement Award.
