Nepal largest jail for Indian criminals in region

More than 370 Indians are languishing in various prisons in Nepal , recent data from India’s Ministry of External Affairs show.


In a written reply to the upper house of parliament Rajya Sabha this week, Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khursid informed that 377 Indian citizens are in Nepal i jail s.


The offences for which they are doing time are not specified. However, Khursid mentioned that 6,293 Indians are currently in jail s of more than two dozen countries, including Nepal , for drug trafficking, theft, murder, economic offences, violation of employment contracts, overstay and illegal entry, among other offences.


The United Arab Emirates has 1,012 Indian prisoners, the highest of its kind. Among the South Asian nations, Nepal has the highest number of Indian prisoners, followed by Pakistan (224), Bangladesh (167) and Afghanistan (27).
