The Nepali Congress (NC) has stepped up efforts to form the new government under the leadership of the party President Sushil Koirala following the president’s call to nominate a consensual candidate to lead a national government.
NC President Sushil Koirala has been holding political meetings in a bid to garner support in favour of his candidacy.
Koirala met with UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Wednesday evening at the latter’s residence in Lazimpat, Kathmandu, and urged him to support his candidature.
“I have put forward the proposal for support on behalf of my party,” said Koirala talking to media after the meeting. He added that Dahal, in response to his proposal, assured to give the reply after discussing the proposal in the party.
Earlier in the day, Koirala met Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik (MJF-L) Chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachhader and appealed for support.
Likewise, the NC president also held talks with Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party Chairman Mahanta Thakur.
Though the alliance of opposition parties has expressed readiness to accept the NC leadership, the ruling coalition has not accepted it.
On the other hand, the UCPN (Maoist) has proposed transforming the current Baburam Bhattarai-led government into a national consensus one. The Maoists has insisted on nominating a candidate for the PM’s post from the ruling alliance itself.
