Belbari incident draws NHRC attention

KATHMANDU – National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday urged the government to carry out independent investigation and punish the guilty of Tuesday’s event in Biratnagar where a dalit girl from Belbari VDC-3 of Morang was subjected to mob assault and public humiliation.


On Tuesady morning, Maya Sarki and Manoj Bishwakarma, both belonging to the Dalit community, were assault ed and paraded in public with soot smeared on their faces and shoe garlands around their necks.


The duo was accused of defaming Jeevan Bhetwal, who had reportedly made sexual advances on 23-year-old Maya on Saturday evening.


Issuing a press release today, NHRC, national human rights watchdog, said their attention had been drawn by the inhumane incident that unfolded in Belbari yesterday. It also said that the regional office in Biratnagar has been keeping a close eye on the incident.


The press release further states that the police have filed case against seven suspected people and that six amongst them have already been arrested by the police.


NHRC also urged the officials involved in the investigation to bring the guilty to the book.
