BHAKTAPUR, APRIL 21 – Under Secretary and Chief of Department of Children under the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare, Dr. Kiran Rupakheti said 40 per cent children in Nepal are working as labourers.
Speaking at the first conference of children working as labourers in brick kiln organized by Child Development Society here today, he said as many as 620,000 children are involved in hazardous labour even though various laws and the Child Labour Act prohibit children below 14 years to be used as a worker.
The programme was organized in the context of a campaign to declare Bhaktapur district child-labour-free within the next five years.
During the programme, Director of the Department Labour, Barun Kumar Jha, said it would be possible to control children working in brick kiln only when awareness was created by linking it with business security.
As many as 16 children from different four hotels were rescued few days ago and the local administration has taken actions against those who employed children.
On the occasion, representatives of Save the Children, District Child Welfare Board, Bhaktapur Brick Entrepreneurs Association, and Child Development Society, among others expressed their concern over the increasing rate of child labour. – SETOPATI
