The Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) is enforcing a general strike throughout the country on January 17, demanding that the political parties dissolve the regressive Constituent Assembly (CA).
The party announced the general strike after reaching the conclusion that the ‘regressive forces’ have become dominant in the current CA and that they are ‘hatching conspiracy against the possibility of promulgating a people’s constitution’.
The party informed journalists about the decision in a press meet held after a five-day national conclave that concluded in Kathmandu on Tuesday.
The party is also enforcing general strikes in Eastern, Western, Mid-Western, central region on 10, 12, 13 and 14 January respectively.
The Baidya-led party took the decision to support the protest programs of the UCPN (Maoist) against the ‘conspiracy to promulgate a regressive constitution’.
“We decided to hold protest programs as per the understating reached with Prachanda-led UCPN (Maoist),” said party leader CP Gajurel.
The party has demanded a powerful political conference to promulgate a new constitution.
