Earthquake victims try to salvage belongings from collapsed houses on the eighth day after the 25 April earthquake. International rescue missions that came to Nepal to help it after last month's earthquake can prepare to leave, now that nearly all search and rescue work has been completed, according to the country's Disaster Management Committee. Interior Ministry spokesman Laxmi Dhakal said 03 May that Nepalese were 'very grateful to everyone who came to help us' and that Nepal would take care of the remaining search and rescue operation. The confirmed official death toll rose to 7,040, as reports of rescue workers digging out more dead bodies from the rubble in rural villages continue to pour in.
