KATHMANDU, MAY 24 – Even after the government released Rs5.53 billion for cash relief to the families rendered homeless by the earthquake and despite mounting pressure from the local bodies for immediate distribution of Rs15,000 to each displaced household, the Home Ministry has instructed CDOs in the quake-hit districts not to hand out the money before issuing identity cards.
The ministry has in its working procedure that the cash should be doled out only on the basis of identity cards. However, some CDOs, under pressure from the affected families and the upcoming rainy season, had planned to give out the sum without the IDs after the government released funds to help the people buy zinc sheets or other materials to construct temporary shelters.
