First Breeding Record of Great Cormorant in Nepal

First breeding of winter migratory bird Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) is confirmed in Nepal. A researcher team from Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN) and Govinda Bahadur Singh from District Livestock Service Jajarkot Identified the nests of this bird on the bank of Bheri River, Ragda VDC, Barekot area of Jajarkot district in May 2016. 
The Great Cormorant has an extremely large distribution known to breed in patches through much of central Asia up to eastern China and spend winter in South and south-east Asia. This bird was ideally known as winter migratory bird for Nepal from midhill to low land terai but eight pairs seen breeding first time for country while exploring the little known Barekot area said Dr. Narendra Man Babu Pradhan, Chief Executive Officer, Bird Conservation Nepal. The species frequents both lake and large river habitats and diet consists predominantly of fish said Jyotendra Thakuri, Conservation Officer at BCN.
