Police open fire on agitators, one dead

KATHMANDU: A man died when police opened fire in a clash against the local residents at Jhajpul, two kilometers ahead of Garuda Bazaar, in Rautahat district today.

The dead in the incident was Ramod Saha, a resident of Mahammadpur VDC, said the District Police Office, Gaur.

Those injured in the incident were Dinesh Yadav, Rajesh Yadav and Binod Yadav of the same village.

Clash ensued after the agitators tried to shut down the Birendra Highway.

The locals of Mohammadpur had staged a chakkajam in the pretext that police had impounded two trucks when a truck driver fled after crushing one person to death two days ago.

Seven local residents including a police personnel were injured in the clash. Of them, two sustained critical injuries. The villagers torched Garuda based police beat during the clash.

The clash between the villagers and the police was followed when the police tried to disperse the villagers while they were demonstrating demanding the release of a local from Laxmipur VDC arrested by police in connection with a tractor accident that took place last week.

Police impounded two tractors and arrested their owners in course of investigation of the road accident in which two persons died on the spot while they were attending a wedding procession when an unidentified tractor knocked their motorcycle.  rss
