Somali and African Union troops enter Kismayo

Somali government forces have entered Kismayo, two days after militant group al-Shabab abandoned the strategic coastal city.

They have been battling the al-Shabab militia for control of the city. Residents appeared to welcome the troops, and no fighting was reported.

Analyst Roland Marchal of France’s National Centre for Scientific Research says al-Shabab fighters.

Kenyan and Somali forces had launched a beach assault on the Islamist group’s last major bastion the day before, but had met some resistance.

Reports as to the size and make-up of the AU contingent have been mixed.
