Government bans use of plastic bags in Kathmandu

The government has banned the use polythene bags in the Kathmandu Valley beginning today. The Valley was declared a ‘polythene bag free area’ from today at a Resolution Assembly organized by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment today. The government representatives and the stakeholders present on the occasion expressed commitment to ensure that polythene bags were not used from now as they are harmful to human health and are one of the major pollutants in the Valley. 
Addressing the program, Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh said that the ban on the production and use of polythene bags would be expanded to other places in the country as well.
Secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Dr Krishna Chandra Poudel and Chief of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Purna Bhakta Tandukar, expressed the commitment to execute this decision of the government and urged all the Kathmandu denizens to seek an environmentally compatible alternative to polythene bags. 
CPN (UML) deputy general-secretary Bishnu Poudel, President of the Development Committee under the Legislature-Parliament, Rabindra Adhikari, President of the Agriculture Committee Gagan Thapa, President of the Environment Committee Janak Raj Chaudhary, National Planning Commission Vice-chairman Dr Govinda Raj Pokhrel, among other officials, stressed the need of effective implementation of the government’s decision to make the Kathmandu Valley clean, green and pollution-free. 
Before this, an awareness rally was organised from local Bhrikutimandap in the morning today, which spread the message of the harmful effects of using polythene bags and goods in different parts of the city. RSS
