Former Prime Minister and former Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa died in course of treatment at Medanta Hospital in New Delhi on Wednesday night. He was 88.
RPP Deputy Spokesperson Karan Giri said that the octogenarian leader breathed his last at around 11 pm.
Thapa, who had flown to the Indian capital for treatment, had undergone a successful gastrectomy surgery at the hospital on Friday. His health condition was said to be normal and improving after the surgery.
Thapa, who was born in Muga, Dhankuta district, was active in Nepali politics for over six decades, until the very end of his life.
He held the country’s top executive post for five times, 3 of which were during the Panchayat regime and twice after the restoration of democracy in 1990.
A strong advocate of Panchayat regime, Thapa was accused by the proponents of democracy of using money and power to secure a victory for the Panchayat regime during the 1980 referendum in which Nepalis voted for either Panchayat or democracy. But he became prime minister with the support of the same democratic forces after democracy was restored.
