Declaring election unconstitutional: Nepali Congress

NCKATHMANDU, MAY 28 – Nepali Congress has said that declaration of election of the Constituent Assembly (CA) by Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on November 22 was unconstitutional.

A meeting of the NC office bearers and Central Committee (CC) members held at Koirala residence at Maharajgunj, on Monday morning, concluded that the process of the election declared by the prime minister was unconstitutional and called on the PM to resign.

After the meeting, CC member Deepak Giri said that the step taken by PM Bhattarai was unconstitutional and therefore he should resign and immediately start formation of a national consensus government.

Giri added that today’s discussion was centered on the formation of a national consensus government.

He further said that there was no alternative for the PM other than to tender resignation as only a national consensus government could hold the election.

The meeting also came to a conclusion that the NC should hold discussions this afternoon with lawyers about the step taken by PM and with leaders of different political parties to know their parties’ stance on declaration of election.

The meeting also called for concrete conclusion immediately as the step taken by the PM of declaring the date of election was unconstitutional and there were no elected bodies at present when the CA was dissolved. RSS
