Monsoon Weakening But Some Places May See Heavy Rains

 25 Aug, 2020
Kathmandu, Aug. 25: With one month left for this year’s monsoon to retreat, rainfall phenomenon across the country is getting weaker from this week, according to the meteorologists.
However, the monsoon’s becoming weaker doesn’t mean that there is no chance of heavy rains in the country, he said. Chances of heavy rains are still there in some pockets in eastern, central and western parts of Nepal, Paudel said.
“The peak time of the monsoon for this season is gradually waning now when about 40 days are left before it comes to an end,” senior meteorologist Barun Kumar Paudel said on Sunday.
He said normally monsoon ends in Nepal from September 23 but sometimes may prolong till the first week of October.
“Though one month is left for the end of this year’s monsoon, we must always stay prepared for the worst that may happen any time,” Paudel said.
“We can’t immediately say that monsoon is getting weaker than the previous days because a new system can develop at any time,” he said. At present, the impact of monsoon trough that developed in Madhya Pradesh of India, has less impact on Nepal, he said.
“Until the monsoon finally ends after September 23, we cannot say with conformity that monsoon is becoming weaker,” Paudel said.
Sometimes, monsoon may last till the first week of October, so there always remains a chance of heavy rains in isolated places any time when monsoon trough develops in India and enters Nepal, he said.
Min Kumar Aryal, another senior meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, said that some parts in eastern and western Nepal still have chances of heavy rains. “But it is sure now that the country will not receive continuous and widespread rains as in the past weeks,” he said.
Normally, rainfall measured between 50 mm and less than 100 mm can be termed as heavy rain, he said.
He said normally there occur four types of rains and they are termed as temporary or brief rain, intermittent rain, continuous rain and widespread rain.
According to MFD’s weather forecast on Monday, the country has general impact of monsoon trough developed in Madhya Pradesh of India and some humid winds arrived from Bay of Bengal, in Nepal.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, there are chances of heavy rains in one or two places of State 1, Bagmati, and Karnali State especially during night time. On Wednesday also, there are high chances of heavy rains in one or two places of State 1, Bagmati, Gandaki, State 5 and Karnali State.
This year, monsoon entered Nepal on June 12, which is regarded as only a slight delay. Rising Nepal
